Tortoiseshell Cat Folklore
The beautiful coats and stunning colours of tortoiseshell cats has made them the subject of folklore, legends, and superstitions across different cultures, each attributing special qualities to these distinctive felines.
We thought that it would be fun to explore some of the folklore, stories and legends behind tortoiseshell cats in different parts of the world! We’ve also written a similar article on the Tortie Catz website which includes a link to a fantastic You Tube video on the subject.

Torties are considered lucky in many cultures
In many cultures, tortoiseshell cats are considered symbols of good luck. Japanese folklore, for instance, regards these cats as protectors of the home, especially when they are kept aboard ships to protect sailors from storms and supernatural threats.
Japanese sailors believed a tortoiseshell cat on board would bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits from their journeys at sea.
The ancient Celts also revered tortoiseshell cats, seeing them as mystical creatures with the power to bring luck, prosperity, and sometimes even glimpses into the future. It was thought that encountering a tortie could bring financial success or a turn in fortunes.
In North America, tortoiseshell cats are often called "money cats," believed to attract wealth to their owners. This name might have originated from the association of the tortoiseshell's valuable, jewel-toned colors with prosperity and rare gemstones.
Torties are almost always female due to the genetics of their coat color, which requires two X chromosomes. This rarity has contributed to a sense of mystique surrounding them, furthering myths that tortoiseshells are particularly feisty, independent, and strong-willed, a trait some call "tortitude."
Despite the varied legends, tortoiseshell cats are universally appreciated for their beauty, charm, and uniqueness. Whether bringing luck, protection, or just a touch of personality, tortoiseshells have found a special place in folklore and the hearts of their owners alike.
