How to Look After Your Tortie in Summer

Keep her happy and safe if you go away

It’s the height of the summer holiday season, and at Tortie Catz HQ we have been lucky enough to enjoy a week long oveseas break recently.

It is always nerve-racking leaving Flo - our tortie, back at home by herself while we go away. We are lucky enough to have family and friends we can trust to pop in and make sure she is fed and has some company, and we wanted to share some other thoughts with you all.

1. Choose the Right Care Option

Torties thrive on familiarity, so keeping them in their own environment is often the least stressful choice. If you can, arrange for friends, family or a professional cat-sitter to visit your home daily. Make sure they understand your pet’s quirks - whether it’s her love of chasing toy mice at 7am or her preference to sit in “her” sunny window spot,

If boarding is necessary, research cat-only facilities with quiet spaces, Torties can be sensitive to noise and changes, so a calm, feline-friendly environment is key.

2. Keep Routines Consistent

Cats are creatures of habit, and torties take this to the next level. Provide your sitter with a clear schedule for feeding, playtime, and litter box cleaning. If your tortie expects dinner at 6pm sharp, she will definitely notice if it’s late.

3. Comfort Through Familiarity

Leave our her favorite blanket, bed or even a worn T-shirt with your scent to help her feel secure. Make sure her usual toys are available, and avoid introducing too many new things right before you leave.

4. Pre-Holiday Health Check

Before you go, ensure vaccinations, flea treatments and microchip details are up to date. Leave your vet’s contact details with the sitter, along with any medical notes (like allergies or ongoing conditions). This preparation gives peace of mind - just in case.

5. Use Technology to Stay Connected

If you’re away for more than a few days, consider setting up a pet camera. Many models allow you to check in, talk to your cat, and even dispense treats. It’s not quite the same as cuddles, but it can ease your own separation anxiety.

6. Prepare for the Return

When you get home, your tortie might be extra affectionate… or she might give you the classic “you left me” cold shoulder. Either way, give her space and let her re-establish her routines with you. Have a special toy or treat ready to mark the reunion.

The Bottom Line

A happy tortie while you’re away comes down to three things: consistent care, a familiar environment, and someone who understands her unique personality. With the right plan, you can enjoy your holiday knowing your feline friend is safe, secure, and (probably) still ruling the roost.

We hope these tips help and happy travels!

Myth: Pet insurance isn’t worth the money

Did you know that one pet health emergency can cost up to $10,000? That could put a huge strain on your savings or even force you to max out your credit cards. Protect your budget and your pet by thinking ahead and choosing a plan that works for both of you.
