How to Host Guests without Stressing out your Tortie
A calm cat is a happy host!

Keeping your Tortie Calm When Hosting
We already know that torties are not your average felines. With their signature sass and strong-willed personality (torties love a but of “tortitude”), they can be particular about routines, environments — and especially unfamiliar guests.

Torties like to have a routine and a ‘safe space’
Whether it’s your in-laws visiting for the weekend or a spontaneous dinner party, your tortie’s comfort matters. Here’s how to host humans without causing stress for your Queen of the house.
Create a Tortie-Only Safe Space
Before guests arrive, set up a dedicated retreat. Choose a quiet room away from foot traffic and equip it with your tortie’s favourite bed, toys, scratching post, and fresh food and water. Include a litter box so she doesn’t have to venture out. This allows her to stay secure and undisturbed if she’s not feeling social.
Pre-Party Playtime
Help burn off any anxious or territorial energy with an extended play session. Wand toys, laser pointers, or her favorite feather chaser can get those zoomies out - and leave her more relaxed. A tired tortie is less likely to protest change (and less likely to swipe at your guests ankles)
Let Her Set the Pace
Some tortoiseshell cats are surprisingly curious about newcomers, but many prefer to observe from afar. Never force interactions. Let your guests know she’ll come out if and when she feels ready. Offer treats for guests to gently toss near her without eye contact or sudden moves.
Maintain the Tortie Routine
Cats love predictability. As much as possible, stick to your tortie’s regular feeding times and play routines. This keeps her grounded and less reactive to disruptions in her territory.
Use Calming Aids If Needed
Consider using pheremone diffusers like Feliway in common areas to reduce tension. Natural calming sprays or treats can also help. Always consult your vet before introducing supplements, especially if your tortie has known sensitivities.
Bonus Tip: Train Your Guests!
Yes, really. Give guests a mini Tortie 101: no loud voices, no chasing, no picking her up. Respect earns trust in the tortoiseshell world.
Remember, your cat isn’t being dramatic — torties just feel things deeply (like we do!). With a little prep and understanding, you can host the perfect gathering and keep your feline diva calm and content.

Don’t let a surprise vet bill torpedo your budget
Routine vet checkups are rising, and some surgeries can cost as much as a holiday in Europe. Fortunately, pet insurance can help offset these unexpected costs. With some policies starting at $10 and reimbursing up to 90%, you can keep your pet healthy without sacrificing your savings.
